Moultoneering – riding on tiny tyres for a smoother ride

Daved Sanders

ISBN 978-0-9926217-0-4

Written by the founder of the Moulton Bicycle Club, Daved tells of the story of the club formed in 1975 based on the earlier Moulton Safari Club of 1967 from the earlier Moulton Safari Club.

In 1976, Alex Moulton prepared a MkIII prototype (Clubman) that was used on an alpine touring Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Austria. Still in use after more than 100,000 miles even being ridden through flooded waters to the Annual Meet.  This book covers the travels across the Alps in sleet and snow in summertime and escaping the antlers of deer in Austria. Also of  travels in Spain, Portugal and Madeira during December are included. Various Audax rides are related including the 1978 Centenary Ride from Paris to Harrogate.

Photographs taken in a forty year history with the Moulton bicycle are published, most for the first time, including the MkIV development Moulton. Racing bicycles include the Moulton S Speed of 1967. Not everyone has visited the factory buildings and the photo tour is shown where the current AM and New Series models are built. The first edition of the Moulton Cyclist of April 1975 announcing the launch of the club can be read.

Each copy is signed in the Pelikan ‘Ink of the Year 2013’, the year of publication.

Postcards from the edge of Britain – a 5,000 journey around the coast

Peter Mann

ISBN: 1-898941-40-8

For twenty years Peter Mann was the curator of Road Transport at the Science Museum, when the opportunity came for him to travel around and explore the coast of Britain. After riding a Dawes Galaxy, Peter considered the Moulton and bought the APB model for his travels noticing the better ride and comfort. He began his journey on May 1994, starting from his home in London and headed northwards up the east coast of England. His journey continued around the coast of Scotland, then southwards down the north west of England. Following the coast westwards around Wales and then heading southwards to Lands End. Having reached this most far part of England, Peter turns homewards along the south coast through Devon, then heading to London through Dorset and Hampshire.  There was no hurry for Peter as he took time off to look around the various points of interest and talking to other travellers on their own journeys, during the 328 days of his travelling. Details of what he carried and details of his journey are included in the appendix in this entertaining and enjoyable read of his journey. Peter still rides a Moulton, and speaking with him at the Moulton Meet in September 2017, he now rides the AM22 model that he says is so much better than his APB.

Departures and Arrivals

Eric Newby

ISBN: 0-330-34902-3

One of Britain’s best loved travel writers rode a Moulton bicycle he acquired in 1970 and cycled from the Wash to Wimbledon by the Vale of Gloucester. Although not much more is written of this journey, he did comment that his journey to Italy was on a Carlton bicycle because of problems of obtaining spare tyres for the Moulton. He did say, however, that the current AM models were as though designed by Faberge and the most beautiful bicycle in the world. The front cover of the paperback and the hardback editions show him riding this prototype Moulton MkIII.

Half Way Round

Peter Knottley

Colin Martin asked Alex Moulton for a bicycle to ride around the world. A Moulton MkIII was built by John Tovey for his round the world tour. There are two publications available, either the earlier blue or later yellow cover. This booklet provides a brief story of Colin’s journey from England to Australia, effectively 'half way round'. His bicycle was stolen in Australia and although a replacement was provided for Colin, he remained in Australia and settled in Queensland.

Peter Knottley rode with Colin Martin part of the way.

Colin completed the 'other half' of his journey in 2002 riding a green New Series Moulton. In 2008, the journey was completed when he rode across Australia from the point where his original bicycle was stolen to his home in Queensland.  It is understood that a new publication is being written of Colin's journeys.
